Experiencing a flat tire on your drive is one of the most irritating moments. You hear a shrill sound, experience weird movements of your card, and finally, start noticing smoke coming out of the burning rubber. The situation can be bad at any given time, but it can be worsened when it happens on the highway.

Highways are the place where vehicles are always speeding by. Therefore, there is a significant chance of accidents there. If you ever get involved in an accident caused by a flat tire, you need compensation. A St. Louis car accident attorney can calculate your damages and represent your case.

What to do in case of a flat tire

1. Do not panic

Getting stuck with a flat tire on the highway can certainly be a scary experience, especially if this is your first time and you are alone in the car with no passengers. However, it is important to collect your thoughts and stay calm. Panicking worsens the already bad situation.

2. Slowly move to a safer place

Driving with a flat tire is not ideal, but you do not have a choice when you get stuck in the middle of the highway. Stopping in the middle of the road increases the odds of getting hit by a car and results in a rear-end collision. To avoid this, slowly drive your car until you reach a reasonably safer side. As you drive, you will feel your tires getting worse. But, it is important if you wish to avoid a car accident.

3. Remain in your car

If you cannot change the tires yourself and need to wait for professional services to arrive, you should wait while sitting in your car. You are no longer in the traffic, but it still applies a double layer of safety to be inside your car rather than standing on the road. You can better avoid a pedestrian accident by remaining in your car.

4. Road shoulders are not a safe place

If you are thinking of moving your car to the road shoulder, it may not be the brightest idea. Yes, road shoulders are safer than being in the middle of the road, but they are still not an accident-free zone. You should try your best to move completely off the roadway if possible.

5. Call a friend

You may need to call a friend if you are in one of the following situations.

  • You do not know how to change the tire and cannot reach professional services.
  • You cannot move your car to a safer place.

Calling a friend who can change the tires or bring someone who can, can save you from a deadly accident.
