Education has remained a throughline in Betty Sebrow’s career, which began in the early 1980s when she taught English and science at several Brooklyn schools, including the Yeshiva of Eastern Parkway and the Yeshiva of Kings Bay. Based in Lawrence, New York, she went on to found Neshoma Advocates, LLC, in 2007, an organization that develops educational summits and training services supporting at-risk youth. Betty Sebrow also works as a relationship coach and matchmaker through Baila Sebrow Events, LLC, and writes a column for the 5 Towns Jewish Times. She holds an English degree from the City University of New York, Brooklyn, and a master’s degree in journalism from New York University, credentials that continue to inform her focus on mentorship and guidance across her professional roles.

The Importance of Mentorship in Student Success

Mentorship programs have become a common feature in educational settings, providing students with opportunities for both personal and academic development. These programs pair students with more experienced individuals who offer guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate various challenges and opportunities. Through mentorship, students gain valuable insights from experienced individuals while developing confidence, important life skills, and a stronger commitment to their academic aspirations.

Students who participate in mentorship programs often gain academic advantages that can support their long-term educational success. Through personalized guidance and support, mentors can help students better understand challenging subjects, develop effective study habits, and improve their academic performance. Beyond academic results, mentoring can increase student engagement by encouraging participation in class, curiosity in learning, and involvement in new opportunities. Mentors may also help students strengthen critical thinking skills by encouraging them to examine information carefully, consider different viewpoints, and make informed decisions.

Mentorship can help students develop the resilience needed to overcome academic challenges and remain focused on their goals. Students who experience academic difficulties may feel frustrated or lose confidence, but mentors can encourage them to see setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than signs of failure. Mentors can offer valuable perspective and reassurance by sharing their own experiences and the lessons they learned while overcoming challenges. They can also help students develop practical problem-solving skills by identifying effective strategies or suggesting additional academic support when needed. Through this guidance, students learn how to respond to challenges more constructively, build confidence in their abilities, and become better prepared to handle future obstacles.

Mentorship programs can prepare students for future careers by providing guidance, industry insights, and professional support. Through interactions with experienced professionals, students gain a better understanding of different career paths and the opportunities available within their fields of interest. These programs also create valuable networking opportunities, allowing students to build relationships that may lead to internships, employment opportunities, and ongoing professional guidance. In addition, mentors can assist with career planning by helping students assess their strengths, set realistic goals, and develop strategies for achieving them. They may also offer practical support with resumes, cover letters, interview preparation, and workplace skills.

The benefits of mentorship often continue long after a student has overcome a specific academic challenge. Through ongoing guidance and support, mentors can help students develop confidence, critical thinking abilities, and independence that contribute to long-term success. As students advance through different stages of their education, the mentor-mentee relationship can become a valuable source of continued encouragement and advice.

This support can be especially helpful during major transitions, such as progressing to higher levels of study or entering the workforce. Mentors can provide practical guidance for navigating these changes while helping students stay focused on their goals. In some cases, the relationship continues beyond graduation, with mentors offering career advice, professional insights, and networking opportunities that support success in the workplace and beyond.

A successful mentoring experience often begins with identifying individuals who can offer relevant guidance, support, and encouragement. Potential mentors can often be found within academic environments, including professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants. Students can also expand their search through alumni networks, professional associations, and organizations connected to their areas of interest.

When reaching out to a potential mentor, students should introduce themselves professionally, explain their goals, and express genuine interest in the mentor’s experience or accomplishments. Rather than immediately requesting a mentorship relationship, students may find it more effective to seek advice on a specific issue or area of interest. Effective mentors are good listeners and have experience in fields that are relevant to their mentees’ goals. They are also willing to invest time in others and provide constructive feedback, encouragement, and practical guidance that supports personal and professional growth.
