Ras Dashen is a mountain in Ethiopia. It’s the highest peak in the Danakil Depression and its eastern slopes form part of the boundary between Ethiopia and Djibouti. The mountain is an important source of water for the local inhabitants, who live at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000 m above sea level.

The area surrounding Ras Dashen has been designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO (UNESCO World Heritage Site). This makes it a great destination for visitors interested in hiking and nature conservation.

Ras Dashen hiking routes are the most popular hiking routes in Ethiopia. The Ras Dashen peaks are located in the Debub Omo Zone of Ethiopia, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in Africa. The mountains are located at an elevation of about 4,620 feet and are surrounded by lush vegetation. The best time to hike these mountains is from April through October, depending on weather conditions. SummitClimb offers climbing in affordable price. Some of the mountains are as follows:

  • Everest Climb
  • Ama Dablam
  • Elbrus
  •  Manaslu
  • Cho Oyu
  • K2
  •  Lobuche
  • Island Peak
  • Aconcagua
  • Mera Peak
  • Lhotse

There are two main hiking routes that lead to Ras Dashen:

The first route starts from Jimma at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level and travels through a fertile valley of oak forests and fields before reaching Ras Dashen at 3,500 meters above sea level. It takes about six hours to reach Ras Dashen from Jimma. The second route starts from Agaro at 1,700 meters above sea level and climbs up through a narrow gorge with sheer walls before reaching Ras Dashen at 4,200 meters above sea level (5 hours).  The first route is recommended for beginners, as it is easier and safer than the second route. However, both routes offer breath-taking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys.
