Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has recently filed legal action against Disney, stating that the company broke contract on a promised theatrical exclusive when they simultaneously released the Marvel movie on their streaming service.
Scarlett Johansson is the star of the Marvel movie Black Widow, which was shown on the Disney Plus platform. She claimed that she was told that it would be released first in theaters, and missed out on royalties that depended on its box office performance.
Disney responded to the lawsuit and said Johansson had ‘no merit whatsoever’. A representative said that they complied fully to Johansson’s contract and mentioned that the streaming option allows her ability to earn additional revenue. Johansson says that the streaming release cost her approximately $50 million.
‘Black Widow’ is the latest Marvel movie and went live in theaters and Disney Plus simultaneously. The same-day strategy has been applied across the industry due to the ongoing pandemic.
