The hospitality industry is broad, employing millions of people globally. A career in the sector relies on your ability to observe positive customer relations that, in return, drive revenues to the business. Based on the industry’s diversity, you will encounter several hospitality courses that prepare you for the task ahead. While getting started with employment in the sector can be a challenge, understanding the industry can be beneficial. To prepare yourself for a career, select your specialization, and build the necessary skills alongside earning the right qualification as highlighted below.

Qualifications

After high school, you can enroll for a diploma or bachelor’s degree in hospitality. Numerous institutions offer hospitality courses ranging from hotel administration, marketing, management, catering, and others. Additional languages can be useful, especially if you aspire to serve international customers. Most international hotels might require an additional language since it helps serve customers better.  You can also gain community service experience through volunteering during off-school sessions. The skills gained through community service can be transferred to the service industry.

Specialization

The hospitality sector comes with different subsets, and you need to focus on a single niche to increase your chances of employment. In most cases, specialization begins right from school, either if you are pursuing a diploma or a degree. Before deciding on a specific niche, do your market research by asking yourself relevant questions based on your passion and the position you would like to serve in. You can also talk to pioneers in the industry to guide you down the path that suits your capabilities.

Network

Remain proactive and persistent and reach out to peers in the sector. Ask relevant questions to seniors in the industry as they will guide you on some of the mistakes to avoid at the start of your career. Remain present with a mindset of learning even when you get rejection. If you get rejected, it is advisable to circle back with a follow-up message. Another means to network is through identifying opportunities in the sector and getting involved. You can join a hospitality body, or attend related industry events.

Apply for Jobs

Applying for entry-level jobs is a good start, as the chances of getting hired are higher. Some of the jobs to consider include; porter, housekeeping room attendant, bar staff, and room service attendant. While perusing the job description, look out for specific keywords like entry-level, junior, or trainee. One critical mistake to avoid is sending out a generic resume to any job posted within the industry. Always target your resume to the job description.  Besides applying for jobs, consider internship programmes since they act as a great way to kickstart your hospitality career.

Endnote

Starting a career in any field can be challenging, and hospitality is no different. However, you can get a footing by ensuring you have the proper qualification and relevant experience suitable for the service industry. Remain realistic and understand that you will be starting from the bottom with the possibility of growing your career like most people.
